Contractor Opportunity: Editor / Writer – Road Safety at Work program

Editor / Writer

6 month term with possible extension
(up to 95 hours/month) 

Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) is seeking a seasoned Editor/Writer in a contract position for the Road Safety at Work (RSAW) program. This is a new role for the RSAW program responsible for writing and editing articles, templates, meeting guides, website text, and other material in plain, accessible language for a variety of business audiences. This person will also be responsible for producing a monthly newsletter and developing and maintaining an RSAW communications style guide.

The goal of RSAW is to increase awareness and knowledge about occupational road safety, and motivate employers, supervisors, employees and the general public to take specific action resulting in a reduced number of injuries and fatalities associated with workplace motor vehicle incidents (MVIs).

Working with a high performing, collaborative team of 10, the Editor/Writer will be able to rely on subject matter experts but is expected to work independently. Knowledge about or experience in occupational health and safety and/or road safety would be an asset. The successful candidate will have a rewarding opportunity to support an initiative aimed at reducing work-related motor vehicle fatalities and injuries.


Editing / Writing

  • Create an RSAW communications style guide by consolidating/documenting current practices, as well as recommending improvements to ensure consistency and simplicity
  • Act as a communications resource for team members
  • Write/edit resources for the RSAW website
  • Edit other materials drafted by team members (e.g., webinar scripts)
  • Review and analyse RSAW’s current newsletter format, and recommend changes to improve its performance based on industry best practices and design considerations
  • Produce the contents of RSAW’s monthly newsletter, including researching, writing, editing, recommending articles/topics, and ensuring the accurate layout of the newsletter
  • Write and/or edit original articles to support RSAW-managed Cone Zone (roadside worker safety) and Shift into Winter (winter driving safety) campaigns, as well as for RSAW advertorials and efforts to gain earned media pick-up


  • Participate in weekly online team meetings

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism or another relevant subject
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in technical writing and editing

Skills & Personal Qualities

  • Creativity – being able to present information, spot new and interesting angles to engage RSAW’s intended audience
  • High degree of knowledge and skills in creating materials that are clear, grammatically correct, and well-structured for easy reading or listening
  • Ability to conduct research and to make their writing as accurate and detailed as possible
  • Understanding of road safety challenges and issues and provincial road safety initiatives is a strong asset; familiarity with occupational health and safety issues is also an asset
  • Proficiency with MS Office
